Prioritising people
Improving the lives of our employees and protecting the people throughout our supply chain is fundamental to both our values and our purpose. We also embrace the role we can play in supporting the communities we work within.
Our commitment to supporting employees throughout every stage of their working life continues to guide our approach, and we are proud that over half of our workforce have chosen to build long-term careers with us. From wellbeing champions to inhouse occupational health nurses, to healthcare plans for all, to subsidised cafeterias, we make the health and happiness of our people our number one priority.
Labels are for furniture, not for people
We’re an eclectic bunch of people here at The Senator Group, and we think boxes and labels should be just applied to furniture – not human beings. We focus on creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels a sense of belonging. Where our people, clients, suppliers and communities are united in one purpose – a job well done.
We have long understood the benefit of a diverse workforce, because innovation is born from uniqueness. Through an inclusive culture, and manager training, we promote that difference is a strength. Being brilliantly different is who we are, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
We may work hard, but we play hard too
It’s fair to say that at The Senator Group, we know how to party. As a family business, we like to include events that our employees’ families can enjoy too, and one of those is our annual family fun day. Every year, we host a huge festival of fun in the rolling fields of Lancashire to celebrate, and champion, our people.
Welcoming over 3,000, this festival caters for everyone; face painting, events, prizes, celebrity DJ performances, great food, and coaches to pick up and drop off. We combine our Family Fun Day with The Royal Lancashire Show, a prestigious agricultural event with its origins dating back to the 18th century. Our Chairman, Colin Mustoe MBE, is the driving force behind the Royal Lancashire Show, donating valuable time, resources and land to bring together the people of Lancashire; one of the most fulfilling days in its calendar.
When it comes to Christmas, we go all out. We fill December with treats, competitions and events, that include a Christmas market at our Lancashire headquarters. We host a four course home cooked Christmas dinner at four of our sites, asking for a donation of just £2.50 which goes to charity. And for our employees’ little ones, we have a Christmas party and panto, which ends with a special gift from Santa.
Last year we raised and donated over £100,000 for charity
A sense of community has been embedded into our culture since the beginning, and as we’ve grown, we’ve been able to offer more help to those who need it most. 97% of our workforce lives within the local community and many of the commitments we make from a social value perspective directly support our employees, their families and friends.
The Senator Group’s Charity and Community Committee was formed in late 2021 with the aim of providing structure, good governance and consistency to the business’ approach to social value. They create an annual calendar of charity events and together we’ve played football, walked, raced go karts, donated easter eggs and warm coats, inspired local school children, boxed and baked.
Where our values take root
We are proud to support national organisations who share our values. That’s why we’re Gold Corporate Members of the Wildlife Trust for Lancashire, Manchester and North Merseyside, proud partners of The Royal Countryside Fund, and a signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant.
One of the projects that is close to our heart is Blackburn & Darwen Youth Zone, an organisation we have been supporting since its beginning in 2012. Our Chairman is one of the original Patrons. The original vision was that the Youth Zone would be part of the fabric of the town, owned by every member of our community.
